Minor children of the woman murdered seven years ago receive 10,000 GEL state compensation with support from Rights Georgia
28 June, 2023With the assistance of Rights Georgia, the minor children of the victim of femicide received a total of 10,000 GEL in state compensation. This decision by the State Care Agency to grant compensation is particularly important given the fact that it was applied to the femicide committed in 2016.
The grandmother of the children, the mother of the murdered woman, applied to Rights Georgia for legal assistance in the matter of compensation. She became responsible for caring for the minors after the children's father shot and killed his ex-wife, a 31-year-old woman, in February 2016. The father was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for femicide.
The grandmother and her grandchildren have been living for years in a village near Tbilisi in difficult economic conditions. The only source of their income is the orphan's pension, which is not enough for a full life and development of minors.
On May 22, 2023, Rights Georgia applied to the State Care Agency with the verdict in the murder case, the written statements of the children and the grandmother, and other requested documents. On June 22, 2023, the Director of the State Care Agency issued an order to grant compensation in the amount of 5,000 GEL to each of the two children of the femicide victim.
The children already have plans for the use of financial support from the state. "We like to study a lot and we are going to use the money we have received for our education," said the minors.
Rights Georgia represented the interests of children before the State Care Agency with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program.
The payment of state compensation began in 2023, after the Government of Georgia, by Decree No. 523 of November 9, 2022, established the procedure for payment of state compensation to victims of domestic violence and children of victims of femicide.
