Minor Daughter of Femicide Victim Receives 10,000 GEL State Compensation with the Support of Rights Georgia

For the First Time, a State Compensation was Granted to the Child of a Femicide Victim
With the support of the organization Rights Georgia, the minor child of the femicide victim, an 8-year-old girl, received state compensation of 10,000 GEL. The girl's grandmother approached the organization for help in obtaining compensation after the conviction of the perpetrator.
The grandmother was forced to assume full responsibility for raising the child after the mother, 36 years old woman, was brutally murdered by her former husband, the father of the child, last July. Following the family tragedy, the grandmother and granddaughter continued to live in a rented apartment under difficult economic conditions.
"I have suffered an irreparable loss. My only daughter was killed, and I have a little granddaughter who I have to take care of as long as I can," says the girl's grandmother. "It would be a real relief to receive financial compensation for the hardships my granddaughter has gone through," she admits.
The minor girl became eligible for financial compensation after the court closed the murder case and the guilty verdict against the perpetrator entered into force. On April 3, 2023, Rights Georgia submitted a request to the State Care Agency with the verdict in the murder case, written statements of the child and the grandmother, and additional documents. On May 2, 2023, the Director of the State Care Agency issued an order to pay compensation of 10,000 GEL to the daughter of the femicide victim.
This is the first case of granting state compensation to the child of a femicide victim, since on November 9, 2022, the Government of Georgia, by Decree No. 523, established the rules for payment of state compensation to victims of domestic violence and children of femicide victims.
Rights Georgia represented the interests of a minor girl before the State Care Agency with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program.
